JON CHONG, on what could be one of his LAST gigs in Singapore in a while, will be joined by a full band consisting of some of Singapore’s up-and-coming young musicians, at the beautiful Esplanade Outdoor Theatre.

Expect familiar tunes from his debut album “State of My Mind” and new tunes from his sophomore album “Beauty in the Small Things” spread over 2 sets. Join the band as they bring you through a mix of grooves, styles and emotional energy tied together by heartfelt, and honest lyrics that will cause you to feel, ponder and reflect on life’s journey.

Once upon a time, Singapore indie rock music had #1 radio hits, extensive media coverage and a considerable fan base. So what has happened since then to change that and will Singapore music ever be appreciated in the same way again? The answers to these questions (and more) are addressed in this talk to be presented by Singapore indie music specialist Kevin Mathews with guest contributions from Pat Chng (The Oddfellows, TypeWriter), Yee Chang Kang (The Ordinary People, TypeWriter) and Hentai Cat (MONSTER CAT).

Songwriting is not only an art but also a technique that can be studied and learned. During this panel discussion, the fundamentals of songwriting (i.e. melody, lyrics, chord progressions and arrangements) will be presented by established songwriters Don Richmond, Sarah Cheng-De Winne, Yee Chang Kang (TypeWriter) and Kevin Mathews, who will also double up as moderator. Come and experience the experts share the stories behind your favourite songs and even special songwriting tips!

7:30pm – MUSIC WORKSHOP / “FROM OPEN MIKE TO CONCERT HALL”
What does it take for a performer to go from open mike to the concert hall? Find out in this interactive, hands-on workshop where experienced musicians like Jack & Rai, Pat Chng (The Oddfellows, TypeWriter), Nick Chim and Rachael Teo share valuable tips on musical performance and will offer real-time advice on how you can improve your singing and musicianship in order to fulfil your performing ambitions.

ABOUT OOOM FEST

World Refugee is excited to organise the first edition of the OOOM Music Festival (OOOM Fest), Singapore’s first non-profit, cause-driven acoustic music festival. OOOM is an acronym for “Originals Only Open Mike” and is one of Singapore’s longest-running regular open mike programmes. It now stands simply for Peace and aims to be a global platform for celebrating creativity, enjoying the arts, and encouraging community bonding. OOOM Fest is a consolidation of what OOOM has achieved in the last four years, bringing people together through the universal language of music. It will be held at the National Library Building from 8th to 9th December 2012, between 12pm and 10pm both days.

The festival will feature unplugged performances and insightful music workshops by local talents, established musicians and industry practitioners. Festivalgoers will get to enjoy free acoustic sessions at the intimate OOOM CHAMBER (Square Garden, Basement 1) and the main performing space, OOOM OASIS (at The Plaza, Level 1), jam with total strangers at the JAM ROOM, and find out about social issues at the booths of participating non-profit organisations. Open mikes, the hallmark of OOOM, are integrated into the festival programme, where anyone can register to perform without any prior auditioning.

The theme for this OOOM Fest is “Music Brings Us Together.” The festival’s community building and cause-driven approach is in line with World Refugee’s peace-building and environmental efforts. Executive Director Jonathan How says, “In essence, this festival is all about people and planet. We hope that the collective impact of all performances causes participants to leave the festival with hearts and minds uplifted, and inspired to contribute to making the world a better place.”

OOOM Music Festival Singapore 2012 is supported by the National Library Board, Mothers & Sons, Radio Heatwave, Kamco Music and Ling Yong Bao.

Haven’t been able to just sit down and ponder as much as I would love to these days – I have always been a firm believer of going against the tide especially when things could so easily spiral out of control these days. Imagine if you were floating on a flowing river, if you just let the current take you wherever it goes, you might end up in a gorge or dashed against the rocks. At times you just need to put your foot down and look around you, take the time to seek clarity in your next steps and re-charge, appreciate what you have.

Just some thoughts on a rainy day… I’m going to start by rekindling first loves and avoiding the bitter-trap! How about you?
